I spent New Years Day 2016 reading 150 year old newspaper articles.
I was shopping in a local antique store recently when I came across a real treasure. The shop owner found a scrapbook in the Detroit area which was compiled by M.S. Goodrich beginning December 25, 1851 and the most recent articles are from 1924.
The book is pasted full of poems, anecdotes, comics and articles of big news of the time. There are several articles from the political career of Enos Goodrich. Not sure yet if that is her father or husband.
Ms. Goodrich seems to have had a great sense of humor and a bit of romanticism, if you can determine one’s personality traits by what they choose to keep from the newspaper. She also pasted in household recipes for things like rag rugs, washing soap and cough syrup.
Apparently the New Year was important to them in the late 1800s because she also had the lyrics to Auld Lang Syne. I wonder how many people sang this last night.
